What is Methylphenidate?
Methylphenidate (generic Ritalin) is one of the most popular treatments for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It works by stimulating the central nervous system, which improves focus and reduces restlessness in people with ADHD.
There are many generic drugs that contain methylphenidate, including:
- Ritalin LA
- And more
FDA Warning for Methylphenidate and Priapism
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a Drug Safety Communication for methylphenidate in December 2013 to warn about a rare but serious side effect called priapism.
This erection of the penis is painful, long-lasting, and unwanted. It occurs when blood is trapped inside the penis. In many cases, patients require hospitalization and surgical treatment. Without treatment, priapism can cause permanent erectile dysfunction. The risk is especially high for children, who are less likely to report symptoms to an adult.
Methylphenidate Side Effects
- Priapism (long-lasting, painful erection)
- Severe psychiatric disorders (psychosis, depression, etc.)
- Erectile dysfunction
- Sudden death
- Heart rhythm abnormalities
- Heart attack
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- And more
What is the problem?
Schmidt & Clark, LLP is nationally recognized as a class action law firm, but our lawyers are not filing a methylphenidate class action. Instead, we are filing individual methylphenidate lawsuits on behalf of people who had priapism, heart attack, cardiovascular events, and other severe injuries.
About Class Actions
When a large group of people need to file essentially the same lawsuit, it often makes sense for them to join together in a class action. One member is selected a the “class representative” and use their case to argue for compensation on behalf of the entire group. Lawyers are typically paid a percentage of the financial recovery, and other members of the class action divide the rest.
Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Methylphenidate Class Action
Class actions offer a number of advantages in certain circumstances, but they can also be detrimental — especially for plaintiffs who must accept high attorneys’ fees or a “low-ball settlement,” all without ever seeing their case taken before a judge and jury.
At Schmidt & Clark, LLP, we file individual methylphenidate lawsuits because we believe our clients deserve personal legal representation. Methylphenidate is associated with devastating side effects, permanent disabilities, and even death. If you were injured by this defective drug, our lawyers can help you fight for compensation. We always review cases for free. For most of our clients, we provide legal representation on contingency-fee.
